Tamaki Makaurau has, until recently, often been thought of as a place without a Maori history. Ngarimu Blair will discuss important places and events that have shaped the physical and social geography of Auckland from a Ngati Whatua perspective. He will also outline past, present and future challenges for his tribe in maintaining its identity and also its value in creating a distinct Tamaki Makaurau - Auckland character.  These challenges also include the bio-diversity crisis in Auckland (which is also termed the World’s Weediest City) and its impact on Ngati Whatua culture.  Come and hear what Ngati Whatua is doing about such challenges.

Ngarimu Blair is Ngati Whatua o Orakei’s heritage and resource manager. He is a heritage and urban planner specialising in urban sustainability issues. Ngarimu is currently developing plans to create a sustainable urban papakainga (village) in Auckland City which could see 6,000 of his people be able to afford to return to their ancestral lands in central Auckland. Ngarimu’s work has involved revitalising Maori histories and re-interpreting urban landscapes to again include a Maori perspective. He also created and manages the largest ecological restoration project on the Auckland Isthmus at Bastion Point, unique in Aotearoa (New Zealand) for the scale of its native forest restoration without the use of pesticides and herbicides. He is also a trustee of the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board and a keen sportsman.
