Kefir

I imagine kefir was mentioned under nutrient dense food at the hui.....so hopefully this is the right place to post this. I am wondering how to revive kefir that hasn't had any new milk added in ages, hasn't been refrigerated (don't have one) and has gone really really off smelling and looks like it is growing mould. Is it better to throw it away and find a new bug or can it be revived?
