DESIGN FOR LOCAL RESILIENCE BY LEARNING SOME APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY.
This is technology that can be made at an affordable price by ordinary people using local materials to do useful work in ways that do the least possible harm to both human society and the environment.

1) Introduction to traditional earth building -
Tradtional mud brick and cob to make modern buildings.

The NorthTec Horticulture Dept is offering a “Sustainable Rural Development Level 4” in Silverdale with Transition Town organisers and tutors Gawain Sharp and Betsy Kettle. Gawain has a business planning background and Betsy has experience designing organic permaculture/ horticulture properties.

We will look at the nature and mysteries of water\, while taking a practical approach to understanding the role and importance of water to life\, with a maori perspective on water and wild foods. This will include identifying the sources and cycles of water\, water quality\, purification and treatment techniques\, storage\, harvesting\, use and conservation\, and aquaculture.

The most productive home gardens are an integrated mix of food trees\, shrubs\, herbs\, and small animals. We cover the basics of backyard food production\, from the design and layout of an orchard\, to the use and care of small animals. This includes the selection of species for climate and site characteristics\, the layout and spacing of trees\, planting\, propagation\, maintaining soil fertility and plant health. Also the importance of small animals in pollination\, manuring and recycling within the orchard\, and the management of these animals.
Earthcare Education Aotearoa is excited to start offering Rural Living Skills &\; Practice Internship Courses for Permaculture Design Graduates at Tui Comunity\, Golden Bay\, next year.
This will be an opportunity to advance your skills under experienced guidance and implement some of your own designs. A 10-week course will run from mid March to end of May 2011\, following the PDC in February. Details are still under development. You can express you interest from now on and I will keep you posted on the development.

Garden planning and design
In this half day workshop\, Tanja and Florian will help participants to design and plan their dream garden. A series of practical\, fun exercises (some of them outside) will bring forth visions and communicate the basics of sound garden design.
