In this three day workshop we will explore the use of earth plasters for both internal and external work. We will learn about the advantages and limitations of using earth as a building material, how to test for suitability of local clays and how to prepare plaster mixes on site.
The workshop will have a very strong practical focus, giving you plenty of opportunity to get a bit dirty and practice the newly learned skills.
We will be working on the Whare Uku of Te Mauri Tau, a recently built mud brick workshop/teaching space that will feature exterior and internal earth plasters.

A 3 day workshop covering the basic level theory and practice of Biointensive gardening. Biointensive Growing is a system that has been developed by John Jeavons after over 30 years of studying the ancient agriculture systems that actually grew soil, and great civilizations. He has used that knowledge together with his own extensive research to put together the Bio-intensive system, which is about growing the most amount of food in the smallest area for the least amount of energy used (and water), in a way that everybody can do.
A building technique that dates back 600 years and is now being rediscovered due to it's low use of building materials and therefore low embodied energy. Made from locally pressed tiles, beautiful spanning shapes are built without extensive formwork and at minimal cost. The designs of these dome shells work with pure compression and no reinforcement steel.
At Awhi farm a hand press is used to make the tiles out of our local materials of pumice and stabilized with cement.

We’ll explore ecological energy dynamics, nutrient cycles, and appropriate technology with Richard Lee. On Saturday afternoon we’ll visit Eco-Innovation with Michael Lawley to explore renewable energy. On Sunday we’ll explore how water moves through the landscape, rainwater harvesting, and strategies for utilising wastewater.

This is the first workshop of the Auckland Permaculture Worshop (APW) Permaculture Design Certificate programme. In this workshop APW introduces permaculture as a philosophy, ecological design methodology and grass roots community movement. This inspiring and challenging workshop provides the philosophical and theoretical framework for the remaining eleven workshops offered by APW. Participants will learn about the historical, cultural, and ecological dimensions of permaculture through open dialogue and examples of a wide range of innovative design solutions from around the world.
We’ll explore the farming and cultural patterns imposed on the landscape. We’ll visit John Earney’s farm and explore pastoral farming strategies. Then we’ll visit Jeremy Thomson’s farm to learn about forestry & integrated farm livelihoods. On Sunday we’ll explore the design of shelter, food forests, orchards, and the integration of small animals.
This Permaculture Design Certificate is run by Green Cloak in partnership with the Taranaki Environment Centre.
Farmageddon will immerse you in the story of a simple agrarian community in heartland china. The weekend is centred around a purpose-built board game that'll have you growing crops, competing for local resources and trading with neighbouring villages in order to nourish a growing family. But that's only half the story...
Dicussions throughout the weekend challenge agricultural concepts and explore strategies to adapt to the changing world.

11. Urban Living
Over 80% of the developed world’s population lives in cities that are dependent upon the countryside for water, food, building materials, power etc, and to absorb all the waste. With energy descent and resource depletion impacting on our economy, we look at more appropriate and sustainable ways of living in cities. We cover the challenges of living in the city, the opportunities for suburban retrofitting, co-housing and urban farming, adapting apartment living and reducing your ecological footprint, building urban eco-communities, and urban layout and development.

Tahuna Beach, Nelson
20th April 2011, 12 noon
Come and join us in this peaceful gathering - to commemorate the first anniversary of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and to express our concern of a similar catastropy happening here.
Let us draw a line in the sand against offshore oil drilling in NZ waters and the dangers it presents to our oceans and marine life, our fishing industry, coastal economies and tourism.
Let us stand in solidarity with many others throughout the country and the world on this day - to demand a clean energy future!

Hi
Working bee in my house.
Several things to do, but I want to engage with a working group, so one day we work in my house, another day somebody else, and another day yours.
I hope that the group will grow in numbers, and one day will become 2 groups, and then 4 and so on.
Hope see you there.

We have had excellent response from teachers and students from Year 1 through Year 13 to our adaptive approach to integrating permaculture principles and practices into The New Zealand Curriculum. The workshop shares the innovative projects we've designed and implemented so far and helps participants design their own projects for their local schools.
In Permaculture we aim to build holistic systems: ecologically, socially and spiritually complete.
This one day workshop concentrates on the people side, on how people can generate a future of cooperation and resilience. It draws on the life skills needed to work in partnership with others. It is the goal of this workshop to acknowledge difference and diversity and to work with these tensions as a way to transform relationships.
Sabine and Chris, both experienced group workers, facilitators and educators will guide you through this day.
