Welcome to 'our place' Eco-Event!

We're in the middle of pruning 1,500 trees, settling into our new home, discovering our gardens, making compost, learning about living on the land and much much more. So, no better time than now to have a tour of our 14 acre certified organic property as we share our discoveries with you.

We've invited a special guest, Kath Irvine (the 'edible backyard' guru www.ediblebackyard.co.nz), to consult on our vegie and herb gardens. As novice gardeners ourselves, we thought best to ask the expert.

In this three day workshop we will explore the use of earth plasters for both internal and external work. We will learn about the advantages and limitations of using earth as a building material, how to test for suitability of local clays and how to prepare plaster mixes on site.

The workshop will have a very strong practical focus, giving you plenty of opportunity to get a bit dirty and practice the newly learned skills.
We will be working on the Whare Uku of Te Mauri Tau, a recently built mud brick workshop/teaching space that will feature exterior and internal earth plasters.

Thursday October 08, 2010
Start: 08/10/2010 10:00 am

A 3 day workshop covering the basic level theory and practice of Biointensive gardening.
Biointensive Growing is a system that has been developed by John Jeavons after over 30 years of studying the ancient agriculture systems that actually grew soil, and great civilizations.
He has used that knowledge together with his own extensive research to put together the Bio-intensive system, which is about growing the most amount of food in the smallest area for the least amount of energy used (and water), in a way that everybody can do.

Start: 08/10/2010 5:30 pm

A building technique that dates back 600 years and is now being rediscovered due to it's low use of building materials and therefore low embodied energy. Made from locally pressed tiles, beautiful spanning shapes are built without extensive formwork and at minimal cost. The designs of these dome shells work with pure compression and no reinforcement steel.
At Awhi farm a hand press is used to make the tiles out of our local materials of pumice and stabilized with cement.

This is the first workshop of the Auckland Permaculture Worshop (APW) Permaculture Design Certificate programme. In this workshop APW introduces permaculture as a philosophy, ecological design methodology and grass roots community movement. This inspiring and challenging workshop provides the philosophical and theoretical framework for the remaining eleven workshops offered by APW. Participants will learn about the historical, cultural, and ecological dimensions of permaculture through open dialogue and examples of a wide range of innovative design solutions from around the world.

Start: 19/02/2011

We’ll explore the farming and cultural patterns imposed on the landscape. We’ll visit John Earney’s farm and explore pastoral farming strategies. Then we’ll visit Jeremy Thomson’s farm to learn about forestry & integrated farm livelihoods. On Sunday we’ll explore the design of shelter, food forests, orchards, and the integration of small animals.

This Permaculture Design Certificate is run by Green Cloak in partnership with the Taranaki Environment Centre.

Start: 19/02/2011 10:00 am

Farmageddon will immerse you in the story of a simple agrarian community in heartland china. The weekend is centred around a purpose-built board game that'll have you growing crops, competing for local resources and trading with neighbouring villages in order to nourish a growing family. But that's only half the story...

Dicussions throughout the weekend challenge agricultural concepts and explore strategies to adapt to the changing world.
